South County Community Harvest invites you to help reduce food waste and alleviate hunger in your community.

Through harvesting and picking through unmarketable produce from the local farms and neighborhood fruit trees, we hope to gather hundreds of pounds of fresh healthy produce this season for donation to the emergency food sources of south Jefferson County!

There are many ways to help out. Here are some of the volunteer opportunity descriptions:

Volunteer on the farms…

Farm Gleaner  Help us in the field to harvest and retrieve fresh vegetables that would end up wasting away; getting turned in and broken down in the earth. Spend a few hours with a gleaning group on a weekly basis or whenever you are able. Your harvested goods will feed families of Jefferson County who visit the Food Banks (and depending on the crop and farmer, some can go home with you!). Regular gleans will occur Mondays, Wednesday mornings and Fridays. Random gleaning events will take place on various days throughout the week during the harvest season so join our email list to stay updated.
Glean Leader– Get trained to lead volunteers in the field during gleaning events. You will be responsible to keep volunteers on task and following the guidelines of the farm as well as to deliver the produce to the Food Bank Warehouse/Food Pantry (this information will be clear upon the day of the gleaning event). To be a Leader you must commit to a weekly glean or to a particular farm and have volunteered as a Farm Gleaner for at least three gleans. Regular gleans will occur Mondays, Wednesday mornings and Fridays with random gleaning events on various days of the week during the harvest season.
Produce Donation Retriever– If you would like to help out with the cause but would rather not be bending over and getting dirty in the field, you could help transport donated produce to the Food Banks and to the Warehouse. This job could include driving to various farms that have surplus food ready to donate or to farmers markets at the end of the day to retrieve market leftover donations. This position also includes gleaning from cull bins at farms to recover the still edible produce that is cosmetically damaged and unsellable. You must have access to a vehicle for this and must be flexible with getting calls/emails the day before.

Volunteer in your neighborhood….

Fruit Picker – Help pick fruit from neighborhood apple, plum, and pear trees. These harvests will occur sporadically as the fruit will ripen on its own accord. Please, sign up for our email list to find out more about when these harvests will take place.
Fruit Tree Scout – Do you have a keen eye for identifying fruit trees? We need your skills to identify and list out neighborhood fruit trees that we can approach for fruit harvest donations. Maybe you have a fruit tree yourself that you don’t use the fruit from or don’t have the tools to harvest from. A group of volunteers will come harvest your fruit, leave you some, cleanup, and take the remaining fruit to the families who use the Food Bank.

Volunteer from your home…

Home Gardener – Please volunteer to grow some extra produce for the Food Bank this year! If you already have a garden, consider allocating one section of it to be for Food Bank donations. If you are an aspiring gardener, let this be a motivation to begin your gardening adventures. For help figuring out what to plant, how to get seeds, and how to plant, please contact Anna (360 367 1655 or aobunk@olycap.org)
Fruit tree donor – If you have a fruit tree at your home that you aren’t able to harvest from nor eat all the fruit from, consider donating the fruits to South County Community Harvest. Volunteers will come out to harvest the fruit, leave some for you if desired, and share the rest with the community. When donating your tree, please let us know if the tree has been sprayed with pesticide, what kind of
fruit it bears, and roughly how much it fruits.
Contact Anna if interested in becoming involved in South County Community Harvest. Specify your interest if you have one and you will be notified of upcoming opportunities!
