Home Composting Class – Tues, Apr 30th
Join an engaging, online, interactive 90-minute workshop with instruction on how to create and maintain a healthy compost system with food and yard waste. Create compost to amend your soil, retain moisture, provide essential nutrients for your plants, and more! Workshop cost is $25. Participants will receive a $125 Earth Machine compost bin. One per household, please. Participants must attend the full workshop to receive their compost bin. Additional family members or friends may attend at no charge with one paid registration. ReCyclery “Bike Bus” – Wed, May 1st *New
The ReCyclery is excited to start a new program to help kids ride to and from school. A “bike bus” is not actually a bus, but is a supervised bike ride on a set route. ReCyclery staff and volunteer chaperones will escort students to and from Salish Coast Elementary, Blue Heron Middle School, and OCEAN K-12. Join the Bike Bus every Wednesday, starting May 1st! Local 20/20 Beyond Waste Group Meeting – Wed, May 1st *New*
The Beyond Waste Action Group looks at a number of issues including food waste composting, plastics reduction and recycling, reduction of garbage on an individual and community level, and various other waste-related topics that spontaneously come up during the meeting. Discussion: “Local Fresh Food: Programs that Support Access in the Community” – Wed, May 1st
Local 20/20’s Health & Wellness Action Group / Citizens for Healthcare Access will be hosting representatives from the Jefferson County Farmers Markets and OlyCap’s Nutrition Services for an hour-long Zoom discussion on the local initiatives and programs that get fresh, local food into the hands of those who might not otherwise have access. Program: “Who Are The Orcas That Frequent Our Local Waters?” – Wed, May 1st
In nearly every month of 2023 Transient (Bigg’s) Orcas were spotted passing by Marrowstone Island and Port Townsend. Come learn about these orcas as Rebecca Berger does a deep dive into one particular Bigg’s Orca family that raised some eyebrows last September when they came into Kilisut Harbor! Rebecca recently completed the Whale Museum’s Marine Naturalist training program as well as the Bigg’s Orca STaRs program offered by the Orca Behavior Institute and The Salish Sea School. She has spent the past year immersing herself in learning about the Salish Sea and the marine life within it with a special focus on Bigg’s Orcas. This program is hosted by Friends of Fort Flagler. Birding by Ear – Wed, May 1st & 15th, and Sat, June 1st
Have you ever heard a bird in the forest but couldn’t see it and wondered what it was? Join ornithologist Dr. Jackie Canterbury as she leads tours through Quimper West Preserve in the Quimper Wildlife Corridor, and shows how by training your ear you can identify birds through their unique songs. Preserve Steward Wendy Feltham and a Jefferson Land Trust staff member will welcome the group at the Quimper West trailhead and share information about the area before the walk. There is no cost to attend, but space is limited to 15 people each session, and you must register in advance. Wait list submissions will be taken. You may sign up for more than one session. Local 20/20 Climate Group Meeting – Thurs, May 2nd *New*
The Local 20/20 Climate Action Group‘s scope includes reducing greenhouse gases, increasing carbon sequestration, and preparing for climate impacts. Newcomers are most welcome! Featuring a presentation, Q&A session, and time in the Chimacum Corner Farmstand’s Nursery with John and CCF Staff to bring the information to life, you’ll learn to choose locally adapted varieties, understand which fertilizers to apply, time your planting, and prune to avoid diseases and amp your yield. Olympic Cooperative Network’s Annual Gathering – Thurs, May 2nd
All are welcome to attend the Olympic Cooperative Network’s Annual Gathering. Network member Cheryl Markham will share from her recent trip to Italy to study the cooperative networks there. Then, Whidbey Island filmmakers Mark Dworkin and Melissa Young will show their latest film on how a network of Worker-Owned Cooperatives is empowering marginalized communities and transforming the local economy. The presentation and film will be followed by a discussion of how the community can work together to grow economic democracy locally. More information here. Email your questions here.

Spring Plant Sale – Sat, May 4th
The Jefferson County Master Gardener Foundation is partnering with the Food Bank Growers for a spring plant sale. Available plants will be small trees, shrubs, perennials, annuals, ground covers, vegetables, fruits, and succulents. The sale is a fundraiser to support Master Gardener programs and the food bank gardens serving East Jefferson County. More information here.
