Local 20/20 Beyond Waste Group Meeting – Wed, Sep 4th *New*
The Beyond Waste Action Group looks at a number of issues including food waste composting, plastics reduction and recycling, reduction of garbage on an individual and community level, and various other waste-related topics that spontaneously come up during the meeting. Local 20/20 Climate Group Meeting – Thur, Sep 5th *New*
The Local 20/20 Climate Action Group‘s scope includes reducing greenhouse gases, increasing carbon sequestration, and preparing for climate impacts. Newcomers are most welcome! Hazardous Waste Collection Events – Sat, Sep 7th and Sep 21st *New* Residents can dispose of most household hazardous waste* at collection events, which will be held throughout the county and throughout the year. These two events in September are the last for 2024. See flyer for more details, or the Jefferson County Hazardous Waste page. NOTE: Containers holding fuel, paint, etc. will not be returned. *Antifreeze, motor oil, fluorescent lights, and lithium, button, and rechargeable batteries are not accepted at collection events. “Herbs for the Pacific Northwest” on Thurs, Sep 12th *New* The Jefferson County Master Gardener Foundation presents Bruce Bennett, garden designer, lecturer, and contributing garden columnist to many community publications, who will talk about herbs that grow and thrive in the Pacific Northwest. Which ones prefer fertile soil and water? And which ones want nothing except eroded rock? Sun or shade? We can grow herbs for both, as well as ones to use in a variety of cuisines. A 20-year veteran of the WSU Master Gardener Program in King County, Bruce will share his knowledge — including which new herbs we should be growing in our maritime gardens. Native Plant Gardening Speaker Series – Sat, Sep 14th Come learn about planting native plants in your home garden! The Kul Kah Han Native Plant Demonstration Garden hosts a free bi-monthly speaker series focusing on the importance of planting native plants in your garden and the how- to’s of doing it. The September presentation will be given by Kathy Darrow, a member of the Washington Native Plant Society-Olympic Chapter and the Jefferson County Master Garden Foundation. The topic will be “Gardening With Native Plants.” Come rain or shine. There is limited seating so please bring a lawn chair just in case. More information here. History Hike – Sun, Sep 15th Immerse yourself in ecological history with a guided tour along the Dungeness River Levee Trail. With his extensive background in history, preservation, and botany, North Olympic History Center (NOHC) Executive Director David Brownell will provide participants with deep insights into the historical and ecological aspects of the trail. Discover the successful Lower Dungeness Floodplain Restoration project, led by Clallam County and supported by the Jamestown S’Klallam Tribe, and learn about the rich natural history of the region. The hike offers morning and afternoon start times, at 10 am and 12:30 pm, limited to 12 hikers per tour. General admission is $60, with Jefferson County Historical Society and NOHC members enjoying a $15 discount. Participants are responsible for transportation to the hike location. Jefferson County Sustainable Forestry and Local Wood Field Tour Part 1 – Wed, Sept 18th *New* Join Chickadee Forestry at Chimacum County Park where they selectively harvested timber back in 2021 for the Jefferson County Forestry Program to improve overall forest health. See how the forest has responded, talk to local professionals about what forest management can look like, and take a walk through the woods with us. Speakers and guests will be professionals who work in land management, ecological forestry, logging, and conservation. This will also be an opportunity to learn about cost share programs available for caring for your own forest land. Free event, learn more and register here. Jefferson County Sustainable Forestry and Local Wood Field Tour Part 2 – Thurs, Sep 19th *New* Join Chickadee Forestry at the Finnriver Cider Barn to meet people in the community who are supporting their small forestry program and utilizing local wood from the Jefferson County Sustainable Forestry Program and other local forestry efforts. Learn about the issues, the opportunities, and how you can get involved. Or share your own ideas and connect with professionals who are already working in the industry. Their goal is to increase forest health and resiliency, create living wage jobs, and support our community with products we can be proud of. After the panel discussion there will be time to wander and chat with professionals from both nights and enjoy a beverage. Free event, learn more and register here. Summer Fun Guide for Washington State Parks Washington State Parks have lots of fun, educational opportunities for families this summer both during the week and on weekends! Check out their scheduled events or strike out on your own adventure. All State Park operated programs, tours, and museums are free. Parking does require a Discover Pass ($10/day or $30/year), but did you know that you can check out a Discover Pass for free from the library?! Visit the State Parks’ Event Calendar for information on all upcoming events, such as guided walks, evening programs, and Junior Ranger programs. Registration is Open for Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) October courses *New* Olympic Peninsula Mindfulness is offering 2 classes to help handle stressful situations and habitual perceptions that we all deal with. As the elections and holidays approach, we can all benefit from this experiential course to develop resilience and practice more compassion. The in-person MBSR class will be held weekly on Thursdays starting 10/3 – 11/21, 1 -3:30pm at the 629 Fillmore Street Studio in Port Townsend. The online MBSR course will be held weekly on Zoom- Wednesdays starting 10/2 – 11/20, 6 – 8:30 pm. Each course meets 8 times, with an additional day-long retreat. Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction is a mindfulness training program that helps us access and strengthen our own inner resources, to more actively engage in the moment, and find greater balance, ease, and peace of mind. Registration is Open for Oct 5th Tour of the Hedgerow Hailey Lampe of Cruising Climate has started a food forest and wants you to come see! Using regenerative methods, Lampe has started converting a 1/2 acre hedgerow into a demonstration, food-producing ecosystem. The space is in the “during” phase of its conversion, meaning you will get to see some of the behind-the-scenes work that goes into creating a farm. Registration is required. Also, please keep in mind this is a working farm- footing is uneven and may be difficult or impassable for folks requiring mobility supports. Email for more information.
