Our expected outcomes for this meeting are to
- Develop a focused, coherent, carbon reduction policy statement that will address significant community carbon reduction, is doable, and can be implemented reasonably quickly. This proposal will focus on the input we received from those who attended the April 13 Town Hall.
- Establish action steps to take the carbon reduction policy forward.
- Take initial steps to increase the local political will to make effective carbon reduction changes quickly.
The top from policy proposals from the April 13 meeting included the following (here taken verbatim from participants’ notes).
- Change parking requirement in building codes to “de-incentivize” cars
- Toll car traffic in downtown Port Townsend
- Subsidize public transportation to the point that it’s free. Limit parking and charge people downtown.
- Make Port Townsend a car-free city.
- Create connectivity on Port Townsend’s Uptown sidewalk network so it can be used for transportation by everyone. Think strollers, wheelchairs, walking, very young kids on bikes and trikes.
