On April 14, 2023, the initial Moving in the Right Direction Conference attracted 100 community members, local officials, and transportation experts to the American Legion Hall in Port Townsend, WA.

In his keynote speech, American Walks Executive Director Mike McGinn analyzed the local economics of space and place to make a compelling case for increased density in Port Townsend to foster safe, healthy active transportation. Internationally acclaimed walkability expert Dan Burden then showed how easily local streets could be transformed to get people on their feet, bicycles, and public transit.  Other presenters included Tony Jordan of the Parking Reform Network and Katie Gould of Sightline.

Workshop sessions enabled participants to develop and propose solutions for various aspects of transportation in Port Townsend and Jefferson County. A panel of City, County, and Transit officials addressed issues that emerged during the day’s proceedings.
