Styrofoam Recycling – Fri, Dec 20th, & Sat, Dec 21st The Port Townsend StyroCyclers, a Local 20/20 Beyond Waste project, only takes white styrofoam (EPS), all colors of polyethylene (LDPE-4), white EPS food trays, and separated biodegradable (squishy) vs EPS (crispy) packing peanuts (no mixtures). CLEAN and DRY materials only! They inspect at the curb. Please remove all tape, labels, etc., before you arrive. Please combine your materials with those of your neighbors and friends to help decrease the number of vehicles coming to these events. This is a service for residents of East Jefferson county only. Upcoming Events TLAB Meeting – Mon, Dec 23rd The Transportation Lab is a Local 20/20 Action Group working to promote a transportation system that minimizes need for personal motor vehicles. Such a transportation system must be safe, convenient and healthy, and it must be based on: people walking, the most healthful mode; people bicycling, the most efficient mode; mass transit, the most efficient for moving large numbers of people; and private vehicles for providing services and moving small numbers of people. Olympic Peninsula Mindfulness Course: Resources For Managing Chronic Pain – begins Wed, Jan 8th This 8 week course has been created to help you manage pain and improve your quality of life, and will be following the chapters of The Pain Management Workbook by Rachel Zoffness, MS, PhD. The content is based on research that has been made around the neuroscience of pain. Discussion will include how the mind works for and against our whole-body experience. Each week you will have the opportunity to practice and experience pain control strategies that can help rewire the mind to lower stress, pain, and suffering- including various mindful meditations, short imagery exercises, breathing exercises, and conscious movement practices. This year marks the 26th anniversary for the event, which is hosted by the Jefferson County Master Gardener Foundation, and co-sponsored by Washington State University’s Jefferson County Extension Service. This week’s talk is by Richie Steffen, “In Search of Excellence: Great Plant Picks for the Garden.” Richie is the executive director for the Elisabeth C. Miller Botanical Garden where he oversees the garden, its rare plant collections, and the Miller Garden’s primary educational program, Great Plant Picks. Richie is the co-author of The Plant Lover’s Guide to Ferns. Ticket sales help support Jefferson County Master Gardener programs. In this program, students will each repair an Xbox 360 for disc error issues. If time permits, students will also have the opportunity to repair game controllers. Consoles and all other necessary supplies will be provided for the students to work on.This program will run for 4 consecutive Wednesdays – January 15, 22, 29, and February 5th, coinciding with PT’s early release schedule.The class size is a maximum of 8. Tuition is $250 and easily accessed full scholarships are available. No one turned away for lack of funds. Classes are Wednesday afternoons with no class on February 19th or 26th. This program was organized to allow for bus transport! Students can take Bus 105 from the Chimacum Junior/Senior campus or the Tri Area Loop A bus from the Port Townsend Park and Ride (departing 2:00 pm). Registration and information is here.
