This Week TLAB Meeting – Mon, Dec 23rd The Transportation Lab is a Local 20/20 Action Group working to promote a transportation system that minimizes need for personal motor vehicles. Such a transportation system must be safe, convenient and healthy, and it must be based on: people walking, the most healthful mode; people bicycling, the most efficient mode; mass transit, the most efficient for moving large numbers of people; and private vehicles for providing services and moving small numbers of people. Rivers Above the Canopy Film – Sat, Dec 28th This stunning documentary delves into the “biotic pump” phenomenon, showcasing how mighty forests like the Amazon create and sustain their own freshwater systems through colossal “flying rivers” of moist air. Featuring leading scientists like Antonio Nobre and Anastassia Makarieva, the film highlights the Amazon’s vital role in global ecology and the devastating consequences of its destruction.This is part of the Global Earth Repair Foundation’s series of films on climate solutions. Olympic Peninsula Mindfulness Course: Resources For Managing Chronic Pain – begins Wed, Jan 8th This 8 week course has been created to help you manage pain and improve your quality of life, and will be following the chapters of The Pain Management Workbook by Rachel Zoffness, MS, PhD. The content is based on research that has been made around the neuroscience of pain. Discussion will include how the mind works for and against our whole-body experience. Each week you will have the opportunity to practice and experience pain control strategies that can help rewire the mind to lower stress, pain, and suffering- including various mindful meditations, short imagery exercises, breathing exercises, and conscious movement practices. Find out how to turn a leaky pond, a waterlogged dip in your yard, or the edge of an existing pond into a bog garden filled with plants that will thrive in the Pacific Northwest. Mike Boock, from the spring 2024 Master Gardener class, will draw on environmental law to distinguish between bogs, fens, swamps, and marshes at the next presentation of the Jefferson County Master Gardener Foundation. In this hands-on class, you’ll learn to craft a bow drill kit (which you’ll take home!), identify the best materials for fire-starting, and understand the anatomy of fire. Explore various fire-making techniques, including magnesium rods and flint and steel, while preparing to create fire in any survival situation. This is a great activity for parent and child! This year marks the 26th anniversary for the event, which is hosted by the Jefferson County Master Gardener Foundation, and co-sponsored by Washington State University’s Jefferson County Extension Service.The first week’s talk is by Richie Steffen, “In Search of Excellence: Great Plant Picks for the Garden.” Richie is the executive director for the Elisabeth C. Miller Botanical Garden where he oversees the garden, its rare plant collections, and the Miller Garden’s primary educational program, Great Plant Picks. Richie is the co-author of The Plant Lover’s Guide to Ferns. Ticket sales help support Jefferson County Master Gardener programs. Time: 10am – noon | Location: Jefferson County Fairgrounds, Port Townsend Video Game Console Repair Class for Teens – Wed, Jan 15th through Wed, Feb 5th JeffCo Repair will be hosting a free Video Game Console Repair Class with the Port Townsend Library during the month of January! In this program, students will each repair an Xbox 360 for disc error issues. If time permits, students will also have the opportunity to repair game controllers. Consoles and all other necessary supplies will be provided for the students to work on.This program will run for 4 consecutive Wednesdays – January 15, 22, 29, and February 5th, coinciding with PT’s early release schedule.The class size is a maximum of 8. Teen should be able to commit to each of the 4 sessions. Tuition is $250 and easily accessed full scholarships are available. No one turned away for lack of funds. Classes are Wednesday afternoons with no class on February 19th or 26th. This program was organized to allow for bus transport!
