Pruning Tips for Apple, Pear, and Plum Trees – Tue, Feb 11th *New*
Food For Thought is a free series offered by the Quimper Grange that examines ”all things food” in our area. Come and learn about which tools and techniques are the best for thinning both healthy and unhealthy branches. Master Gardener Doug Van Allen will also speak to the pros and cons of using extension pruners which have a good reach if you want to stay on the ground vs. a ladder. Doug will cover the nuance of why trim just above “collar” at the branch joint, how to cut to encourage lateral growth, and why it’s important to keep light & air flowing through the limbs. Q and A will follow.

Talk: Owner’s Manual to Your Body – Thu, Feb 13th
The Jefferson County Master Gardener Foundation presents “Owners Manual to your Body: Ergonomics and Body Care for Gardeners,” a practical workshop designed to teach you how to care for your most important gardening tool, your body. Physical therapist Erica Nixon Mack of Discovery Physical Therapy will demonstrate essential ergonomic strategies and self-care techniques to help you avoid aches and injuries while gardening. Whether you are planting, weeding, pruning, lifting, or bending, discover how to move with ease, improve posture, and keep muscles and joints healthy. Workshop: Climate Tipping Points: Fact or Fiction? – Feb 13th, 20th, and 27th
What are the 16 climate tipping points, are they real, and, if so, what does that mean for our future well-being? We will cover the work of the late Al Bartlett and Johan Rockstrom, among others. This class will be highly interactive. Discussion led by Mark Cooper, who describes himself as an average citizen interested in the impact of a changing climate and how it is affecting our lives and the lives of future generations. Village Class Weekend – Fri, Feb 14 through Sun, Feb 16
Tradition meets creativity with a unique hands-on Village Class experience. Bow Making/Archery, Felted Boots, Backpack Basket Making, Leather Shoemaking, Arrow Making, and Leather Backpack Making are being taught simultaneously in the same space. This allows participants to be exposed to several arts while focusing on one specific skill.
There are one-day, two-day, and three-day options, depending on which project you choose.

Port Townsend Repair Event – Sat, Feb 15th
Join us for this free community gathering in which people with repair skills share their time and talents to fix their neighbors’ belongings. Bring your toaster that no longer toasts, sweater with a hole in the elbow, and excitement to get these belongings repaired while also learning how they did it and ways you could do it yourself next time!
At this Port Townsend Repair Event, we will have volunteers donating their time to help repair: small appliances/electronics; textiles/clothes; bicycles; and other household items

Clay Antieau: The Importance of Being Evergreen– Sat, Feb 15th
The 2025 Jefferson County Master Gardener Yard & Garden Lecture Series is held on Saturdays from January 11 through February 15. This year marks the 26th anniversary for the event, which is hosted by the Jefferson County Master Gardener Foundation, and co-sponsored by Washington State University’s Jefferson County Extension Service.
This week’s talk is by Clay Antieau, “The Importance of Being Evergreen.” Clay is a horticulturist, botanist, environmental scientist, and educator. He has served as president, board of directors member, and chapter chair of the Washington Native Plant Society, past president of the Northwest Chapter of the Society for Ecological Restoration, and research associate at the University of Washington’s Burke Herbarium.

PTMSC Lecture: Animals of Extreme Habitats in the Deep Sea – Sun, Feb. 16
Join PTMSC for this Future of Oceans lecture, presented by Dr. Paul H Yancey, Senior Research Scientist and Professor of Biology Emeritus at Whitman College. This lecture delves into the deep sea, Earth’s largest and least explored habitat, where life thrives in surprising ways despite extreme conditions of darkness, cold, and low food supply.
