This Week Local 20/20 Beyond Waste Group Meeting – Wed, Feb 7th The Beyond Waste Action Group looks at a number of issues including food waste composting, plastics reduction and recycling, reduction of garbage on an individual and community level, and various other waste-related topics that spontaneously come up during the meeting. Time: 10:30 am – 12 pm | Location: Online Student Poetry, Open Mic, and Zine Release Party – Thurs, Feb 8th The public is invited to hear Sunfield Waldorf School 7th and 8th grade students read poetry. Afterward there will be an open mic where everyone may share their favorite poems. There will also be Valentine’s cards and crafts and a student-published zine of original writing and art for sale. Time: 4 pm (doors open 3:30 pm) | Location: Finnriver Farm and Cidery, 124 Center Rd, Chimacum Jefferson County Master Gardener Foundation Presents “Five Essentials for Successful Seed Starting” – Thurs, Feb 8th Master Gardener Beth Marshall’s presentation covers the basics of propagating plants from seed and shares stories of both her triumphs and failures. She became fascinated with growing plants from seed after moving to a small farm in Chimacum with a derelict vegetable garden. She bought a greenhouse and went to work growing both vegetables and ornamentals from seed. Now living in Port Townsend, she continues to grow a wide variety of plants from seed – vegetables, annuals, perennials, trees, shrubs, and natives. Beth will have seeds available for anyone wanting to grow plants for the 2024 Master Gardener plant sale in May. More information here. Time: 3 – 4 pm | Location: WSU Extension classroom, Kively Center, 97 Oak Bay Rd, Port Hadlock Snow Creek Uncas Tree Planting Party – Fri & Sat, Feb 9th & 10th, and Feb 16th & 17th Join the North Olympic Salmon Coalition and the Jefferson Land Trust in planting native trees and shrubs at volunteer events along the banks of the newly restored Snow Creek Uncas Preserve, February 9th, 10th, 16th, and 17th. There are nearly 9,000 trees and shrubs to plant this winter to reforest the Snow Creek Uncas Restoration project area. A tour of the restoration project will be included after the planting.
