Crabbing 101 Workshop – Thurs, June 15th Want to learn more about recreational crabbing in Washington State? Need advice on how to set up your gear to prevent the loss of your crab pots and catch more crab? Join the Jefferson County MRC and their partners in Port Hadlock on Thursday, June 15th for a FREE Crabbing 101 workshop! You’ll hear from state, tribal, and recreational crabbing experts about local management strategies, regulations, and general tips and tricks to help you catch more crab. The workshop will also include a live demonstration of proper crab pot rigging, and ample opportunities to ask all your crabbing-related questions! Tickets are free, but space is limited. Register at https://bit.ly/crabbing2023 Time: 6:00 – 8:00pm | Location: WSU Extension Classroom, 97 Oak Bay Road, Port Hadlock Clamming at Fort Flagler – Sun, June 18th Join the Friends of Fort Flagler to explore and harvest our local clams at the lower campground of Fort Flagler next to the Beachcomber Café. We will identify local shellfish, discuss the common harvest tools and how to use them, how to read a tide table book and why! How to care for your catch after harvest and finally a few suggested ways to prepare them. What should folks bring? (shovel, rake, gloves) #2 shovel-long handle, tined garden scratcher, separate small or medium size bucket (each digger must have their own container), gloves–rubber garden gloves are best but not required, shellfish license if over 16 years old. For Fishing License in Washington State, the age limit for residents is 16 to 69 years. For Youth, they must be 15 years of age. And For senior citizens, the age limit is 70 and above. There are special reduced-fee licenses for disabled residents and non-resident disabled veterans. A one or three day license might suffice for some folks if they don’t plan to shellfish again. We’ll discuss the what, why, where and how on biotoxins. We’ll also review what we as local residents can do to reduce biotoxins. Michael Dawson is the Water Quality Manager with the Department of Jefferson County Public Health. His principal responsibility is to protect surface water in eastern Jefferson County, Washington, from non-point source pollution. His goal is to keep shellfish beds open for harvest and ensure that outdoor water recreation is safe. Mr. Dawson also assists the state with monitoring marine harmful algae blooms along 200 miles of shoreline. River Otter Beach Walk/Talk – Wed, July 30th *New* Join us to learn about these cute and curious creatures that live throughout the Puget Sound. We will be taking a beach walk on East Beach past the Wansboro Battery and discussing the river otter’s life cycle, behavior and where you might find them. If we are lucky, we may even see one! Jill will review the effects of pesticides on pollinators, soil and human microbiome and how we as a community can affect change. Presenter: Jill Allison – Jill has a background in science and medicine which adds to her understanding of the interactions (and the biology and chemistry) relating to the interactions between soil health, pollinator health and human health. Jill has a B.S. in biology, graduate studies in bacteriology and public health and a Master’s Degree in Traditional Chinese Medicine. Registration. In the mornings, students experience the outdoors, museum and aquarium exhibits guided by Port Townsend Marine Science Center educators. And in the afternoon, artist Mikal Robinson leads crafts, stories and games to play as we learn more about the ocean and all it’s delightful creatures.
