“Developing Electric Propulsion Systems for Jefferson County Boats”
Alex Wilken, Family Owner, Seattle Boat Works, LLC, Seattle WA
Thursday, June 18th at 12:30 PM • Clubhouse of the Port Townsend Yacht Club
Our Key Speaker is Alex Wilken of the Seattle Boat Works which specializes in electric propulsion systems for all kinds of marine transport using either AC or DC marine motors as well as in a variety of related marine electric peripherals such as generators, chargers, batteries, solar panels, and wind generators.
The idea of electric propulsion for boats is not new. The navy’s submarine service has always used quiet, no-emission electric propulsion systems in undersea operations. And electric propulsion is not new to the marine community in Jefferson County either: a very big electric motor is being used to power a large sailboat, high-speed “planing-hulled” boats are being outfitted with electric propulsion systems, general experimentation with electric boats is occurring, and battery-powered electric motors are being installed in racing sailboats.
Mr. Wilken’s Key Speaker presentation will cover (i) the current trends in electric boat construction and operation; (ii) fuel and maintenance advantages of electric propulsion systems; (iii) 48 volt, 72 volt, 96 volt, and 110 volt direct current (DC) electric propulsion systems; (iv) clean engine space, clean air, and clean water advantages of electric boats; (v) speed and distance capabilities of electric propulsion; (vi) quiet running and instant power advantages of electric boats; and (vii) electric boating experiences, including no warm-up, high torque at low rpm, and craft maneuverability.
Jefferson County boat owners, marine industry business people, port planning officials, transportation operators and managers, entrepreneurs, and energy and climate activists will want to attend this presentation on the development of electric boat capabilities and operations in Jefferson County.
