The entry fee per team is a sliding scale ($5 – $20/team) with a limit of 6 people per team. There will be four rounds of marine-science themed trivia. There will be prizes for the winning team. Teams are encouraged to wear PTMSC apparel, marine animal-themed apparel, and/or Finnriver apparel to the event. Bring your toaster that no longer toasts, sweater with a hole in the elbow, and excitement to get these belongings repaired while also learning how they did it and ways you could do it yourself next time! At this Port Hadlock Repair Event, we will have volunteers donating their time to help repair: small appliances/electronics; simple jewelry repair; textiles/clothes; bicycles; and other household items. Upcoming Events TLAB Meeting – Mon, May 26th The Transportation Lab is a Local 20/20 Action Group working to promote a transportation system that minimizes need for personal motor vehicles. Such a transportation system must be safe, convenient and healthy, and it must be based on: people walking, the most healthful mode; people bicycling, the most efficient mode; mass transit, the most efficient for moving large numbers of people; and private vehicles for providing services and moving small numbers of people. Harvesting Your Story: A Free Farm Branding Workshop – Wed, May 28th Join WSU Regional Small Farms Program and North Olympic Development Council for an inspiring in-person session on values-driven brand development led by Crystie Kisler (co-founder of Finnriver Farm and Cidery and Chimacum Grainery). This relaxed, community style gathering is a chance to reflect on how your farm or food business expresses your brand values, and how you can share that story with the world through an in-class workshopping component. Learn how to keep an eye out for invasive European green crabs by participating in a new citizen science project called Molt Search, run by Washington Sea Grant’s Crab Team & Washington State University Extension. At this Molt Search training event you’ll learn about this new invasive species and what’s being done about it, how to identify native and European green crabs, and how to do a Molt Search and submit your findings through the MyCoast app. Time: 1 – 3pm | Location: the PTMSC Aquarium Classroom, Fort Worden, Port Townsend. Orca Celebration – Sun, Jun 1st Everyone is invited to a festive, family-friendly afternoon at Finnriver honoring our amazing orcas! At 3 pm, gather outside to make a big orca on the ground, the “Human Orca Mural,” organized by Backbone Campaign. Free, wear black! From 4-5 pm, community orca advocates will table and present about our critically-endangered Southern Resident Orcas in the Salish Sea, and how we can help them thrive. From 5-7 pm, enjoy the music of Dana Lyons, noted folksinger and environmental activist ($5 cover, sliding scale, no one turned away). Observing them during the period in which they construct nests, mate, and provision natal cells can be the most illuminating time to observe them. Kris, a native bee enthusiast with the Washington Native Bee Society, will lead a tour of some of Fort Flager’s most active bee habitats. With a little luck, she hopes to share them while they exhibit some of these fascinating behaviors, helping to inspire your future observations, in the wild or your backyard. Register here.
