This Week TLAB Meeting – Mon, May 26th The Transportation Lab is a Local 20/20 Action Group working to promote a transportation system that minimizes need for personal motor vehicles. Such a transportation system must be safe, convenient and healthy, and it must be based on: people walking, the most healthful mode; people bicycling, the most efficient mode; mass transit, the most efficient for moving large numbers of people; and private vehicles for providing services and moving small numbers of people. This relaxed, community style gathering is a chance to reflect on how your farm or food business expresses your brand values, and how you can share that story with the world through an in-class workshopping component. All participants are invited to bring a picnic, a notebook, and your authentic self. This class is for farmers and local food producers in Clallam and Jefferson Counties. Time: 10am – 2pm | Location: Tarboo-Dabob Bay – Dabob Post Office Road, Quilcene Beach Walkers and Crab Enthusiasts Wanted – Sun, June 1st Port Townsend Marine Science Center and partners are holding a Molt Search training for interested crab enthusiasts and beach walkers! Learn how to keep an eye out for invasive European green crabs by participating in a new citizen science project called Molt Search, run by Washington Sea Grant’s Crab Team & Washington State University Extension. At this Molt Search training event you’ll learn about this new invasive species and what’s being done about it, how to identify native and European green crabs, and how to do a Molt Search and submit your findings through the MyCoast app. Time: 1 – 3pm | Location: the PTMSC Aquarium Classroom, Fort Worden, Port Townsend. Camas Prairie Walk – Sun, June 1st *New* Join Camas Prairie volunteers for an exploratory walk to discover the Kah Tai Prairie Preserve, many prairie-remnant healing islands, and some history. The walk follows the prairie preserve’s perimeter, makes a stop at the Hanging Tree, and visits other areas where native prairie plants are returning with careful golf park management and many hours of volunteer weeding, seeding and transplanting help. Discover a variety of native prairie plants that are still in bloom or going to seed. The camas plants bloom has passed and their stalks are full of seed, but other plants are in full bloom at the prairie, and we will try to identify as many as possible. The walk starts at the park bench and Kah Tai Prairie Preserve kiosk on the south side of the parking lot. Remember to wear sturdy shoes and come prepared for the weather. Time: 1pm | Location: Camas Prairie Golf Park, Port Townsend, WA Orca Celebration – Sun, June 1st Everyone is invited to a festive, family-friendly afternoon at Finnriver honoring our amazing orcas! At 3 pm, gather outside to make a big orca on the ground, the “Human Orca Mural,” organized by Backbone Campaign. Free, wear black! From 4-5 pm, community orca advocates will table and present about our critically-endangered Southern Resident Orcas in the Salish Sea, and how we can help them thrive. From 5-7 pm, enjoy the music of Dana Lyons, noted folksinger and environmental activist ($5 cover, sliding scale, no one turned away).
