Jefferson County Master Gardener Talk: Planning and Establishing Hedgerows – Thu, Nov 13th
If you are in need of a fence for your garden, consider planting a living one. Hedgerows, a mix of closely spaced, native plants, have been used for centuries as barriers for fields and for dividing croplands from livestock. Often planted as windbreaks in the U.S., they have become increasingly popular as interest in sustainability grows. Jefferson County conservation district manager Joe Holtrop will speak on “Planning and Establishing Hedgerows.” He will discuss factors to consider, including species selection, site preparation, planting, and maintenance. Whether you need privacy, a buffer from the street, or simply want to create a garden room, consider the benefits of offering habitat and sustenance to wildlife as well. This talk is sponsored by the Jefferson County Master Gardener Foundation and WSU Extension is free and open to the public. For more information, visit the website.
Time: 3 – 4pm | Location: Kivley Center, 97 Oak Bay Road, Port Hadlock

PTMSC Lecture: Humpback Whales Generate “Thrums” – Sun, Nov 16th *Updated*
Presented by Dr. Fred Sharpe, Whale Biologist: Humpback whales produce varied aerial sounds including trumpets, shrikes, hoots and percussions. Of special interests are their low frequency, far-traveled, elephant-like, aerial rumbles. Although “thrums” are new to science, they are familiar to those in the Salish Sea. The lecture will feature sounds, slides and the scientific inquiry conducted at Five Finger Lighthouse into these remarkable aerial signals. This event is FREE – Thanks to the Darrow Family for their ongoing support.

Time: 3- 4pm | Location: Wheeler Theater at Fort Worden Historical State Park, 25 Eisenhower Ave, Port Townsend (Note: A Discover Pass is required to park at Fort Worden Historical State Park)
