Submit Questions for LWVJC Candidates Forums by Mon, Oct 13th
The League of Women Voters-Jefferson County encourages members of the public to submit questions for our the following October Candidates Forums:
Thu, Oct 16th: East Jefferson Hospital Commissioner candidates Stuart Kerber & Matt Ready
Tue, Oct 21st: Port Commissioner candidates Clayborn Burleson & Carol Hasse
Wed, Oct 22nd: Quilcene School Board District 2 candidates Jon Cooke & Naomi Stern
Thu, Oct 23rd: Port Townsend School Board Position 4 candidates Amada Grace & Timothy Hawley
Submit your questions no later than noon on October 13, 2025. Concise, unbiased questions directly related to the candidates’ positions and policies will be given priority, and similar questions will be combined. LWVJC strives to ensure that questions reflect a wide range of concerns from our county’s multiple constituencies.
All forums will begin at 6:00 P.M. The one-hour forums will be on zoom and our Media partner KPTZ 91.9 FM will simulcast the forums and livestream them. Links to the forum recordings will be posted on the League’s website after the forums are concluded.
Online Home Composting Class – Tue, Oct 14th *Last one until next May*
Join your fellow Jefferson County citizens for an engaging interactive workshop with instruction on how to create and maintain a healthy compost system with food and yard waste. Create compost to amend your soil, retain moisture, provide essential nutrients for your plants, & MORE! Workshop cost is $25. Participants will receive a $125 Earth Machine compost bin. One per household, please. Participants must attend the full workshop to receive their compost bin. Additional family members and/or friends may attend at no charge with one paid registration. Available to Jefferson County residents only who have not attended a previous compost class with us.

Peace Hill: A Vision Beyond Housing of Inter-Generational Affordable Living – Tue, Oct 14th
This special 1.5 hr Food For Thought discussion presents a family project for a family dream and what is happening with the intentional community planned for Peace Hill. Located at the corner of Discovery and San Juan, and across from the Camas Prairie Golf Course, Peace Hill is focused on developing affordable living that nurtures our environment and enriches lives: a shared dance between a farm, retail, and housing. Presenters: Celine Santiago, property owner and Visionary, Ben Thomas, City Councilor, Port Townsend Vineyards Vintner, Kellen Lynch, Olympic Housing Trust. Refreshments from local growers will be followed by a question and answer session.

The monthly Local 20/20 Steering Council meeting is open to all, and welcomes those interested in active involvement in Local 20/20 leadership. Newcomers are always welcome.

National ShakeOut Drill – Thu, Oct 16th *New*
Join schools, businesses, government and community organizations for the SHAKEOUT DRILL to practice DROP, COVER, and HOLD ON in the event of an earthquake.
NOTE: The All Hazard Alert Broadcast sirens will go off at approximately 10:15AM as a reminder to Drop, Cover and Hold On.
Please DO NOT call 911 when you hear the sirens.

Emergency Preparedness Talks: Earthquake Science – Thu, Oct 16th
Join John Bethel, a retired geologist, as he talks about earthquake science. He will share his understanding of our tectonic setting in eastern Jefferson County, discuss how tectonic processes generate earthquakes in our area, discuss some of the specific hazards that earthquakes pose locally. Plus, some tips to reduce hazards in your home.

Open Day Far Reaches Botanical Conservancy – Fri, Oct 17th
Far Reaches Botanical Conservancy invites all to visit the gardens for a rare “open day”. A small selection of plants will be available for purchase. The Conservancy acquires and conserves botanically significant wild and collected ornamental plants, with special emphasis on those that are threatened or vulnerable to loss and are new to North America. These plants are maintained as a living reference collection for education, public enjoyment and scientific purposes.

qatáy Prairie Weed Warrior Work Party – Sat, Oct 18th *New*
Got weeds? Don’t miss the inaugural work party for weeding native prairie remnants at Camas Prairie Golf Park and learning about local perennial weeds and how to tame them. Enjoy conversation and camaraderie with hot beverages and healthy snacks during breaks! Meet near the Prairie Preserve Kiosk just south of the parking lot. Look for an orange tent and table for registration. Best to bring your favorite weeding tools and garden gloves, and wear shoes without lugs or Vibram soles, which can collect prairie soil. Brinnon Repair Event – Sat, Oct 18th
Join JeffCo Repair for this free community gathering in which people with repair skills share their time and talents to fix their neighbors’ belongings. Bring your toaster that no longer toasts, sweater with a hole in the elbow, and excitement to get these belongings repaired while also learning how they did it and ways you could do it yourself next time! Native Plant Sale Fundraiser at Kul Kah Han Garden – Sat, Oct 18th
This event is to raise money to maintain the native plant demonstration garden at H.J. Carrol Park in Chimacum. Local native trees, shrubs, and flowering perennials will be available for purchase.

Local 20/20 Weekly Announcements invites local photographers to submit images that capture the character of our community and its natural setting. For the opening photo of each weekly email (which is also posted to our website), we seek local color, horizontal (“landscape”) orientation, and jpeg format. Please no children, pets, or recognizable faces. Kindly email your photos, including your name in the jpeg filename. If you’re sending multiple images, please send one per email. We are an all-volunteer non-profit, so compensation for your talent and generosity is a photo credit and our profound thanks.
