The Great Shakeout! Thurs October 17th *at 10:17 a.m.!*
Everyone is encouraged to participate in this year’s Great Shakeout earthquake drill on October 17 at 10:17 a.m. Washington State’s exercise website can be viewed here. The local All Hazard Alert Broadcasting (AHAB) sirens will go off at 10:17AM with the actual tsunami siren tone that will last for three minutes. “This drill involves taking just a few minutes to practice the ‘drop, cover and hold’ activity in our homes and offices and helps to develop muscle memory allowing a person to respond quickly and avoid injury during an earthquake,” says Willie Bence, Director of Jefferson County Department of Emergency Management. Community members are encouraged to take at least one additional step to ready themselves and their families for incidents that could impact the community. Plan ahead to have an ample supply of food and water for your family for up to 30 days. The Dept. of Emergency Management also recommends keeping a go kit in your vehicle with some water and food enough to sustain you for at least 24 hours. Include a seasonally appropriate change of clothes, a blanket, flashlight and any other items to meet your personal needs. “Other preparedness steps could involve creating a family emergency plan or taking a Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) class,” Bence said. For more information about CERT classes, email any questions you have to JeffCoCERT@co.jefferson.wa.us. Jefferson County residents can email questions about the drill to the county’s emergency management office at: JCDEM@co.jefferson.wa.us
