Ukraine Eyewitness Speaks at the Quaker’s – Tues, Sept 19th New
Peter Lumsdaine, member of Physicians for Social Responsibility (PSR) national committee to abolish nuclear weapons will report and discuss his visit to Ukraine & Poland: Where is the war going? What is the answer? What can we do? Lumsdaine is a long-term public-interest educator and organizer, having worked under UC Davis and US Department of Energy grant projects and on the program staff of NGOs such as Global Exchange and the Resource Center for Nonviolence. His work has taken him to armed resource-conflict zones in occupied Iraq, Mexico, and the Philippines – as well as to Jordan, Israel, Guatemala, Korea, Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Over the years he has been an invited speaker for over 100 campus, congregation, community, and conference audiences across the US and beyond.

Protecting Wildlife in Washington – Thurs, Sept 21st New
Lorna Smith, Department of Fish and Wildlife Commissioner, will talk about the role of the Commission in managing and setting policy for the Department of Fish and Wildlife. She will discuss current issues before the Commission, including establishing rules for when the Department can kill endangered wolves and whether or not Washington’s wolves should retain their endangered status.
Lorna is an alumnus of Evergreen College. She served as Snohomish County lead environmental supervisor from 1986-2007 and as faculty for several Continuing Legal Education seminars on environmental compliance. Following her time at Snohomish County, she and her biologist husband, Darrell Smith, spent four years in Costa Rica working on habitat projects and establishment of a new national park. They have been involved in a number of conservation efforts including teaching natural history courses for the Jefferson Land Trust and serving on the Board of the Olympic Forest Coalition.

Help Plant a New Rain Garden in Port Townsend – Thurs, Sept 21st New
Join the Jefferson County Marine Resources Committee, WSU Extension, and Swan School in planting a new rain garden in Port Townsend. Learn about stormwater issues, rain garden design, and different plant functions, while helping to improve water quality in Port Townsend Bay. Bring a friend or family member, or come on your own! Housing Policy Deep Dive – Subsidies and Financing – Mon, Sept 25th New
How is affordable housing funded? How does broad-based ownership of housing square with the costs of obtaining subsidies and financing (debt requirements)? Which funding strategies are best for our community and best for meeting the need for housing now? Quimper Community Housing Collective (QCHC) will host an open, inclusive discussion on housing policy with an eye towards developing a systemic understanding of different housing policies from a housing justice perspective.

Transportation Lab Meeting – Mon, Sept 25th
The Transportation Lab is a Local 20/20 Action Group working to promote a transportation system that minimizes the need for personal motor vehicles. Such a transportation system must be safe, convenient and healthy, and it must be based on:
Walking, the most healthful mode;
Bicycling, the most efficient mode;
Mass transit, the most efficient for moving large numbers of people; and
A vastly reduced personal and service VMT (vehicle miles traveled)
In person, monthly on the fourth Monday.

Donate Blood in Port Townsend – Wed, Sept 27th
It takes 1,000 donors per day to sustain blood supplies for patients in the community. Bloodworks Northwest holds blood drives in Jefferson County and elsewhere in Washington throughout the year. Port Townsend Repair Event – Sat, Sept 30th
This is a free community gathering in which people with repair skills share their time and talents to fix their neighbors’ belongings. Volunteers will donate their time to help repair small appliances and electronics, textiles/clothes, tool sharpening, and other household items. Limit of 2 items per person. If you know the specific part needed to repair your item, please bring it along. Bring your toaster that no longer toasts, sweater with a hole in the elbow, and excitement to get these belongings repaired while also learning how they did it and ways you could do it yourself next time! Free Tire Recycling Event in Quilcene – Sat, Sept 30th
Used tires can be an environmental hazard. Disposal to the appropriate waste stream is critical. Depending on the condition of the tires, they can be made into new tires, tugboat bumpers, or ground into rubber that can be used in road mixtures. Details: tires can be on or off of the rim; no large off-road, semi-truck, or construction tires. Limit of 10 tires per vehicle; residents only; no businesses. The League of Women Voters-Jefferson County uses only questions submitted by the public in their Zoom Forums, and is pleased to announce that the following Candidate Forums will take place:
- 10/2: 6 – 7 PM, Port Townsend School Board Candidates Timothy Hawley, Nathanael O’Hara, Matt Klontz, Nancy Papasodora, and Simon Little.
- 10/ 3: 6 – 7 PM, Quilcene School Board Director-at-Large Candidates Anne Bessey, James Hodgson, Ron Frantz, and Ronald Jones.

Local 20/20 Climate Group Meeting – Thurs, Oct 5th
The Local 20/20 Climate group’s scope includes reducing greenhouse gases, increasing carbon sequestration, and preparing for climate impacts. “Bringing up Baby Stars: Captive breeding of the endangered sunflower star for research and restoration ” Lecture – Sun, Oct 8th New
The Port Townsend Marine Science Center presents Dr. Jason Hodin, Univ. of Washington Senior Research Scientist, Friday Harbor Labs, the first speaker in the 2023-2024 Future of Oceans lecture series. The lecture is free, though donations are always appreciated. In 2013, a devastating outbreak of a mysterious disease known as seastar wasting (SSW) began to spread in our region and along our entire coast, from Alaska to México. It impacted most if not all of our local seastar species to some degree, but sunflower stars (Pycnopodia helianthoides) were hit the worst. In 2019, in partnership with the Nature Conservancy of California, Dr. Hodin and his team began the first ever captive breeding program for this now-endangered species. In this talk, Dr. Hodin will describe their successful efforts to raise this top predator in captivity through their entire life cycle, and some of the amazing things about this species that we have learned along the way. Living With The Dragon of Chronic Pain – each Sun in Oct
For many people, discomfort and pain can be unwelcome companions. Ellen Falconer and Brianna Noach will share their wisdom about understanding and coping with the suffering that accompanies chronic pain, using visualization, mindfulness techniques and meditations, as well as imparting the current scientific studies about the origins of pain. The ABC of Noxious Weeds – Thurs, Oct 12th New
Jefferson County Master Gardener Foundation presents this talk by Sarah Fairbank.Sarah will teach about the A,B,C noxious weed lists as well as the Monitor and Quarantine lists, the difference between WA state and Jefferson County Noxious weeds and their removal for economic and health reasons. Practicing Presence Silent Retreat – Sun, Nov 5th
The group will practice together in companionable silence and with guided meditation, both seated and moving. A day of practicing mindfulness allows attendees to be with both the pleasant and unpleasant moments that arise and disappear continuously – thoughts, emotions, sensations – in a spacious and supportive environment, and see possibility and gain insight into our humanity.
