Since Local 20/20 posted our social justice statement, what emerged was interest amongst several Local 20/20 council members to form “Social Justice L2020 Work Group” within the Resiliency of the Heart Action Group. The group’s intent is a good faith effort to do the work that is required in standing by our statement.
Understanding that there will be short and long term actions, and that the work is ongoing and at times uncomfortable, we will support each other as we dig deeper into the historical context of white privilege and how racism has played a part in creating social and racial injustices that have plagued our societies for centuries.
In solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement and BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, people of color), we are dedicated to working individually and collectively through education, research, resource sharing, and conversation to find out what it means to be an anti-racist and an effective ally and find ways we can help to further the cause of racial equality and social justice. We will incorporate anti-racism into our core purpose by identifying the relationship between climate justice and social justice.
In the future we hope to be able to reach out to those interested in the broader Local 20/20 organization and the East Jefferson County community to offer resources and group learning. We plan to learn about decolonization and hope to build trust with our BIPOC members.
Some of the specific actions we are currently taking:
- The Social Justice L2020 Work Group meets bi-monthly via zoom or similar.
- We continue to view the Generation Movement Social Justice webinars and may create a follow up discussion with Local 20/20 members and East Jefferson County citizens.
- Read and discuss relevant media: articles, books, videos, etc.
- Compile a list of BIPOC organizations and businesses to support.
- Read the work, listen to, and view the art of BIPOC.
- Post articles and book annotations on Local 20/20 Resiliency Readings on the Weekly Announcements.
