Dungeness River Festival – Fri, Sep 25th *New* The Dungeness River Nature Center will host this free annual, all-ages community celebration highlighting the environmental and cultural significance of the Dungeness Watershed through interactive exhibits and educational demonstrations. The general public is invited to join the festivities beginning at 10:30 a.m. to meet with conservation exhibitors, including the National Park Service, the U.S. Forest Service, and the Jamestown S’Klallam Tribe. | Upcoming Events The League of Women Voters of Jefferson County Candidate Forum – Wed, Sep 30th *New* An in-person candidate forum for the Jefferson County Board of Commissioners District 3 and the PUD District 2 will be held at the Tri-Area Community Center. Candidates for County Commission are Stephen T. Nieman and Anji Scalf; candidates for PUD are Keith Kisler and Michael Brittain. The League solicits candidate questions by email or through a link on the league website. Questions are accepted up until three days before the forum. Submissions should include a name and phone number in the event of a need for clarification. This film festival, a partnership between Washington Sea Grant and the North Pacific Coast Marine Resources Committee, celebrates the freshwater and marine environments of the West End of the Olympic Peninsula. Forks Avenue, Forks Lecture: Marine Heat Waves and the Ecology of Southern California Kelp Forests – Sun, Oct 4th Marine heat waves associated with El Niños, as well as the shoreward encroachment of northeast Pacific warm water masses, adversely affect the growth, reproduction and survival of giant kelp throughout its range, resulting in a cascade of effects throughout these iconic forests. Lecturer Ed Parnell is a marine ecologist at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography whose research focuses on kelp forests and the effects of warming and El Niño events on Southern California’s coastal ecosystems. He will highlight why heat waves are deleterious to kelp forests and how the structure of kelp forests is changing off southern California. Find more information here. Recent studies have shown that when Chinook salmon, the preferred prey of Southern Resident Orcas, is in short supply, they’ll supplement their diet with other species, including chum salmon. This is not meant to exclude but an attempt for men to be seen, heard and witnessed among other men. It is an opportunity to unburden oneself and in some ways to relieve one’s families and partners of this emotional work. Learning to tend to one’s grief strengthens the capacity to be with anger, shame and deepest longings but also gratitude, joy, aliveness and blessing energy.
