Tenants Organizing: Shared Stories, Shared Power, Collective Action – Tue, Sep 29th *New*
This 90-minute facilitated community conversation is for those who rent in Jefferson County for the purpose of creating a welcoming first step toward tenant and renter power in Jefferson County. It is not a formal public hearing, policy presentation, or extractive listening session. This conversation is designed to help renters feel less alone, recognize that individual struggles are connected to broader systems, and explore what might be possible when renters come together.

The League of Women Voters of Jefferson County Candidate Forum – Wed, Sep 30th
An in-person candidate forum for the Jefferson County Board of Commissioners District 3 and the PUD District 2 will be held at the Tri-Area Community Center. Candidates for County Commission are Stephen T. Nieman and Anji Scalf; candidates for PUD are Keith Kisler and Michael Brittain. The League solicits candidate questions by email or through a link on the league website. Questions are accepted up until three days before the forum. Submissions should include a name and phone number in the event of a need for clarification.

Local 20/20 Climate Group – Thu, Oct 1st
The Local 20/20 Climate Group meets monthly, on the first Thursday, in person or online. The group is focused on both reducing greenhouse gas emissions and preparing for climate impacts.

Braver Angels: Families and Politics Workshop – Thu, Oct 1st
This 3 hour workshop helps to deepen your understanding of why political differences in families are uniquely challenging, offer insight into common roles people play when these conversations go poorly, and provide strategies and skills for handling family political differences. Jointly sponsored by Braver Angels of North Olympic Peninsula and Salish Sea Fellowship Adult Learning Programs. Free, but you must register in advance. Questions? Email Liz Wise.

River and Ocean Film Festival – Fri, Oct 2nd
Enjoy film explorations of our rivers and oceans at the eighth annual River and Ocean Film Festival at the Rainforest Arts Center in Forks, WA. This film festival, a partnership between Washington Sea Grant and the North Pacific Coast Marine Resources Committee, celebrates the freshwater and marine environments of the West End of the Olympic Peninsula. Lecture: Marine Heat Waves and the Ecology of Southern California Kelp Forests – Sun, Oct 4th
Marine heat waves associated with El Niños, as well as the shoreward encroachment of northeast Pacific warm water masses, adversely affect the growth, reproduction and survival of giant kelp throughout its range, resulting in a cascade of effects throughout these iconic forests. Lecturer Ed Parnell is a marine ecologist at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography whose research focuses on kelp forests and the effects of warming and El Niño events on Southern California’s coastal ecosystems. He will highlight why heat waves are deleterious to kelp forests and how the structure of kelp forests is changing off southern California. Find more information here.
