This garden was launched in June 2012, with 15 families/couples/individuals enthusiastically coming together to transform a large grassy lawn on a double lot in Uptown PT into a place to grow food AND community.
“I have for a long time wanted to have such a garden there,” wrote the landowner, in offering use of the 4,000-square-foot site.
In the summer of 2012, we tilled and leveled the ground and secured a donated (small but serviceable) greenhouse. In the fall we planted a cover crop and installed a deer fence. We were pleased with our first growing season (2013), feeling blessed with good crops of strawberries, raspberries, potatoes, pole beans, carrots, kale, chard, peas, potatoes, and tomatoes.
In 2014 a complete drip system was installed, thanks to a generous grant from the Masters Gardeners. It has been a tremendous asset to the garden. We also have a cold frame, established compost bins, and a lovely area to hold meetings beneath a fig tree. Our raspberry patch, which includes 3 varieties of berry, is a source of delight each year, as is the abundant strawberry patch. Our garden enjoys rich soil, full sun, and excellent downslope drainage. Many of the current members have taken advantage of the wonderful array of classes and workshops available in town, and so our knowledge bank grows continually.
The original numbers have shifted over time, and we now find ourselves eager to add new members, from any part of town. No gardening experience is necessary, just a willingness to share about 2-3 hours a week. We encourage anyone interested to go by the garden, between Roosevelt and Blaine on Adams St, then contact Carol for a “tour” and more details about being part of our group!
