The group looks at a number of issues including food waste composting, plastics reduction and recycling, reduction of garbage on an individual and community level, and various other waste-related topics that spontaneously come up during the meeting. The speakers will discuss how their departments work and how they hold offenders accountable while offering alternatives to prosecution and punishment. He will lead us through the history, biology and anthropological insight into snails and slugs. While snails and slugs are much maligned by many of us gardeners, Ric will teach us how these mollusks make significant contributions to environmental health, are bellwethers of climate change and much more. Join them to help restore our beach to a natural state. Protecting our beaches includes removing invasive species that are choking out our natural grasses. The Park will be giving free day parking passes to any volunteer who does not have a state park pass. Please bring garden or work gloves and come ready to pull grass. Volunteers collect and sort debris as well as contribute data on their findings to the Ocean Conservancy’s international database. Join them at either of two cleanup check-in locations: Fort Worden State Park or Chimacum Corner Farmstand. From these locations, they will send folks out to local beaches to collect debris! Such a transportation system must be safe, convenient and healthy, and it must be based on: Walking, the most healthful mode; Bicycling, the most efficient mode; Mass transit, the most efficient for moving large numbers of people; and A vastly reduced personal and service VMT (vehicle miles traveled) In person, monthly on the fourth Monday. Donate Blood in Port Townsend – Wed, Sept 27th *New* It takes 1,000 donors per day to sustain blood supplies for patients in the community. If you know the specific part needed to repair your item, please bring it along. Bring your toaster that no longer toasts, sweater with a hole in the elbow, and excitement to get these belongings repaired while also learning how they did it and ways you could do it yourself next time! Local 20/20 Climate Group Meeting – Thurs, Oct 5th The Local 20/20 Climate group’s scope includes reducing greenhouse gases, increasing carbon sequestration, and preparing for climate impacts.
