Polystyrene & Low-Density Polyethylene Recycling – Mon, Oct 21st
Port Townsend StyroCyclers, a Local 20/20 Beyond Waste Project, collects white styrofoam (expanded polystyrene, or EPS), all colors of polyethylene (LDPE-4), white EPS food trays, and separated biodegradable (squishy) packing peanuts, but not crispy (EPS) peanuts, and no mixtures. Materials are inspected at the curb, and only clean and dry materials are accepted. Please remove all tape, labels, etc., before you arrive, and please leave plenty of room between vehicles. Email the organizers with questions, and check their Facebook page for weather cancellations.

2-Day Olympic Peninsula Nature Connection – Sat, Oct 26th & Sun, Oct 27th
Spend a weekend diving into the richness of the surrounding ecosystems, learning about the local birds, plants, and geology. Each day will include a hike that will heighten your senses and increase your wilderness skills (such as wildlife tracking and fire-making). Dabob Days Volunteer Project – Sun, Oct 27th *New*
Support the ongoing restoration and protection of the Tarboo watershed, from the headwaters of Tarboo Creek to Tarboo-Dabob Bay, by volunteering at monthly Dabob Days projects with Northwest Watershed Institute! This month, join student leaders to remove invasive Himalayan blackberry roots on a recently cleared restoration site. The site will be planted later this winter during another Dabob Days project. Lecture: The Unsung Roles of Crabs and Shrimps – Sun, Oct 27th
Crabs and shrimps are some of the most familiar (and tasty) denizens of the deep, yet their lifestyles and the ecological roles that they play are often dramatically different from their public personas. Greg Jensen, biologist and instructor at the University of Washington, will dispel some of the myths and misconceptions about these fascinating animals and share observations, photos, and video of unexpected and unique behaviors that will change your perception about crustaceans and give you a new appreciation for their varied roles in marine ecosystems.
