Mike Boock, from the spring 2024 Master Gardener class, will draw on environmental law to distinguish between bogs, fens, swamps, and marshes at the next presentation of the Jefferson County Master Gardener Foundation. In this hands-on class, you’ll learn to craft a bow drill kit (which you’ll take home!), identify the best materials for fire-starting, and understand the anatomy of fire. Explore various fire-making techniques, including magnesium rods and flint and steel, while preparing to create fire in any survival situation. This is a great activity for parent and child! Upcoming Events The Secret Life of Shellfish – Tue, Jan 14th Gordon King of Taylor Shellfish will present the historical significance of bivalves as a food source – the millennia of tribal usage and its current status today. Gordon will reference the known history of shellfish aquaculture and USA history, and its importance to the economy and for employment, and why it has been relatively successful. Molly Jackson, also from Taylor, will discuss the technical side of the industry; our oyster breeding program and some of the genetic work involved with it. Tuition is $250 and easily accessed full scholarships are available. No one turned away for lack of funds. Classes are Wednesday afternoons with no class on February 19th or 26th.
