Western Flyer: Science, Story & the Sea – Mon, Jun 1st
Join the Port Townsend Marine Science Center and the Western Flyer Foundation for a special presentation about the historic fishing vessel Western Flyer with Sherry Flumerfelt, Executive Director of the Western Flyer Foundation, and Rials Christensen, PhD, Director of Education & Science. Built in 1937 and made famous by John Steinbeck and marine biologist Ed Ricketts during their 1940 Gulf of California expedition, the Western Flyer now serves as a floating classroom and working research vessel, inspiring curiosity through the blending of science and the arts.

Home composting classes, online or in-person – Dates starting Tue, Jun 2nd *Updated*
Join your fellow Jefferson County citizens for an engaging interactive workshop with instruction on how to create and maintain a healthy compost system with food and yard waste. Create compost to amend your soil, retain moisture, provide essential nutrients for your plants, & MORE! Workshop cost is $25. Participants will receive a $125 Earth Machine compost bin. One per household, please. Participants must attend the full workshop to receive their compost bin. Additional family members and/or friends may attend at no charge with one paid registration. Available to Jefferson County residents only who have not attended a previous compost class. Sign up for one of the following workshops:

Chimacum Ridge Harvest Tours – Thu, Jun 4th or Fri, Jun 5th
Jefferson Land Trust invites you for a behind-the-scenes walking tour of the harvest operation at Chimacum Ridge Community Forest, its first large scale thinning harvest. You’ll see modern low-impact forestry equipment at work as crews carefully thin selected trees to improve forest health, increase climate resilience, support wildlife habitat, and help sustain clean water flowing into Chimacum Creek. This intentional stewardship is designed to create a healthier, more diverse, and more resilient forest over time.

Expressive Skies Sketch & Stroll – Sat, Jun 6th
Join Art Toolkit Founder and Expeditionary Artist Maria Coryell-Martin for an Expressive Skies Sketch & Stroll in downtown Port Townsend! Maria will warm up with a demo, including tips and techniques for color and composition. The demo will be followed by time for independent sketching, then the group will gather for a sketchbook share and photo. Bring your favorite sketchbook and supplies, and there will be watercolor palettes and brushes available to borrow! Enthusiastic artists of all ages and levels are welcome to this free event.

Wildflower Walk at Fort Flagler, Marrowstone Point – Sat Jun 6th
Join us for a leisurely 2-hour guided wildflower walk at Fort Flagler State Park, where coastal bluffs, open meadows, and forest edges come alive with seasonal blooms. Whether you’re a seasoned plant enthusiast or simply enjoy being outdoors, this walk offers a wonderful way to experience Fort Flagler’s natural beauty at a thoughtful, unhurried pace.

Seascapes: Dramatic Clouds and Water with Maria Coryell-Martin – Sun, Jun 7th
In this workshop, Maria will share techniques for painting dynamic Pacific Northwest clouds and water. You will practice loose wet-on-wet washes and expressive brushwork to translate the ever-changing qualities of sky and sea onto paper with confidence and spontaneity. This workshop includes guided exercises, personalized instruction, and plenty of time for individual practice. All levels welcome! Register to reserve your spot, or email to be added to the waitlist!

For the opening photo of each weekly email (which is also posted to our website), we seek local color, horizontal (“landscape”) orientation, and jpeg format. Please no children, pets, or recognizable faces. Kindly email your photos, including your name in the jpeg filename. If you’re sending multiple images, please send one per email. We are an all-volunteer non-profit, so compensation for your talent and generosity is a photo credit and our profound thanks.
